Award-Winning Movie Posters | Local & International

A good movie poster is one that catches the eyes of people, grabs their interest and encourages them to watch the movie. A great movie poster is the unique and creative ways the poster is made to grab people's attention.

Best Local Movie Poster

Upin & Ipin Keris Siamang Tunggal (2019) Teaser Poster

This particular poster of Les' Copaque's latest Upin & Ipin movie instantly grabbed my attention. Looking at it, you can see that the focus of this poster is obviously the kris. The eyes on the handle glows an eerie blue, giving it away to the people that this kris is no ordinary kris. In fact, the way they did the lighting for this poster makes the kris look mysterious and magical. From then on, we can tell that this movie will have an element of fantasy in it.

The next thing you'll notice is the title below the magical kris. With the dark background on the bottom half of the poster, the title is able to stand out and glow. The same goes with the words 'coming soon'. If you look closer, you'll notice that the two shadows behind the movie title are actually the main characters themselves, Upin and Ipin.

What is the significance of the kris? How are Upin and Ipin related to this Lone Gibbon Kris (Keris Siamang Tunggal)? You can definitely tell that they will be going on another amazing and exciting adventure. Just this teaser poster has made me excited for the movie.

Upon closer inspection, you'll notice that there are small grains of dirt on the kris and on the ground. You can definitely expect some high quality animation for this movie.

Best International Movie Poster

Spider-Man Homecoming (2017) Poster by Martin Ansin

This poster of Spider-Man Homecoming caught my eyes immediately. Looking at the style, it's obviously a reference to the Spider-Man comics, which makes it give off a retro look. What makes this poster stand out, however, is the usage of a swirl to parallel Peter Parker's normal and vigilante life as Spider-Man. You can tell that at the center of the poster is Tom Holland acting as Peter Parker, the protagonist of the movie. As you focus on the main character's face, your eyes drift down to his hand which is doing Spider-Man's signature hand gesture.

At the top of the poster, it shows you a scene of Spider-Man fighting with the Vulture, who is the movie's antagonist. You can see that Spider-Man shoots his webs at his enemy as he swings up onto a building while the Vulture comes down and is pulled towards the ground by the webs. This action sequence is also a reference to how action scenes are drawn in the comic books.

Last but not least, the movie title is at the bottom of the poster. I consider this as the best poster because of the unique way the artist went with the design, which is unlike any other I've seen.

Special Mention

Spirited Away Chinese Official Release (2019) Posters by Huang Hai

Searching and choosing for the best international poster means that I would eventually come across a few amazing posters. While I have already chosen one, I simply could not let these two posters go unseen or unheard of. These two delightfully beautiful posters are made by Huang Hai, and they are made to promote Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away's official Chinese release in China. These two masterpieces stayed true to what the movie is all about, unlike most of the Chinese-made posters for international movies that were made which involves at least some kind of element from China (e.g. Spider-Man Far From Home's Chinese poster and Godzilla's).

The first poster is an absolute work of art and a very ingenious way to give the people a glimpse of all the unique characters in the movie by using the sliding shoji doors, a very iconic door from Japan that sometimes has beautiful paintings painted on them. In addition, Chihiro is shown all alone in a dark hallway with cleaning supplies; curled up tight in a ball. The faces on the wall indicates that they are watching over her, whether it be to protect her, to help her, or to make sure she doesn't escape (in this case, it's the witch). The painting of Chihiro on the door patting Chihiro on the head indicates that she is reassuring herself, and the lamp beside her shows that there is still hope for her to go back home.

The second one just takes my breath away with how beautifully it is done. The artist used a scene from Spirited Away, which is Chihiro running away on a railway track from both No Face and the bathhouse. However, in this poster, the artist had chosen to make it at night and added the lamp as a symbol to show that there is still hope for Chihiro in the darkness she is in; being all alone and lost, separated from her parents and forced to work under a witch, just like how the artist did with the first poster. The artist also added Haku in his dragon form merged with the water as a foreshadowing of what Haku truly is.

Seeing Huang Hai's other works made me anticipate for the official Chinese release for Studio Ghibli's other wonderful movies such as Castle in The Sky and Howl's Moving Castle. Definitely something to look out for!
